Why a 6-Second Website Quietly Loses You Half Your Customers

Why a 6-Second Website Quietly Loses You Half Your Customers

We ran speed tests on a batch of local business websites around Hazaribagh. The average mobile load time was above six seconds. Most visitors leave before three.

What was actually slowing them down

  • Uncompressed photos straight from a phone camera — often 4–8 MB each
  • Five different fonts loading before any text appears
  • Sliders and animation plugins nobody scrolls far enough to see
  • No caching, on cheap shared hosting

The fixes that made the difference

On one clinic site we compressed images, cut the fonts to two, removed the slider and enabled caching. Load time went from 7.1s to 1.6s in a single afternoon, and their enquiry calls went up the same month — same traffic, same content, just a site people stayed on.

THE FREEBIE

The Freebie — the speed audit you can run yourself

Run your own site through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile, then work through this list. No developer needed for the first three.

  • Compress every image to under 200 KB before uploading (use Squoosh, it's free)
  • Cut down to two fonts maximum across the whole site
  • Delete sliders, popups and plugins you don't actively use
  • Turn on caching in your hosting panel
  • Re-test on mobile — aim for under 2.5 seconds
